Keeping up with the news
Talking to/observing people & going out, experiencing different situations
Writing a little everyday
Critiquing other people, and getting critiqued
Most importantly, have a good story to tell
1. Reading:
This is my favorite tip and perhaps the one I use most often. With that said I can assure you that reading 100% makes you a better writer. You begin to understand your own language better, you will find yourself using words you did not before. Your speech will become more defined, and your vocabulary will broaden. You will be able look at things from different perspectives and get new ideas.
2. Reading psychology , history, science and philosophy:
Read up on various subjects to broaden your outlook. Subjects like psychology, help you understand human nature and behavior, use these to define and draw out characters. Read history to understand eras, clothing, culture, lifestyle and so much more, these facts will help you create a more realistic narrative. Science and philosophy are great to add the oomph factor to your writings.
3. Keeping up with the news:
Reading or listening to the news are great ways to hit upon story ideas, mix a little fact with fiction and voila!, your perfect concoction is ready to serve.
4. Talking to/observing people & going out, experiencing different situations:
Observation is the key to writing. It's a tool used to sketch out or describe characters, events, backdrops and settings with great depth and to effect. This demonstrates to the reader that the writer has paid attention to details. The attention to details is what sets you apart from the rest, it helps you to draw out a scene more convincingly and dramatically.
5. Writing a little everyday:
Practice makes perfect. Pen down your thoughts, it's only when you stat putting pen to paper will you develop your own unique style and understand your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you to either seek help where you need it or to improvise on your ideas.
6. Critiquing other people, and getting critiqued:
The art of critiquing is one that is most despised, but without positive critique one can seldom achieve their truest potential. Do not be afraid to critique other works as this helps you to understand your own flaws, and do not shy away when others critique your works, listen carefully, take positive feedback and implement it. This will only help you grow and mature as a writer.
7. Most importantly, have a good story to tell:
A good plot, is the foundation of a great story. Work on a good story, one that you think people want to hear, discuss the idea with friends and family, get feedback, research well, build on the characters and keep it relatable.
